Espadrilles are born from natural fibers that jute gives us, from here with its fibers jute braid is made that serves as base and sole of espadrilles.

MAKE THE SOLE

Seated in the espadrilles bank we start shaping the sole, the shape can be different according to the model or base we want. To know the size we want to make, we have some marks on the bank that help us.

We can also use a rotary table to speed up the manual process of shaping the sole. In this table we have already marked the measurements to be able to make the soles in the size we need.

SEW THE SOLE

Process continues based on the espadrilles bank, it's time to sew the sole with jute or pita thread. Once the thread is ready to facilitate its threading, we start with the heel part and little by little we go through the espadrille from side to side with an espadrille sewing needle.

We use "estaquilla” to properly adjust each stitch and shape the sole of espadrilles.

SEW UPPER TOE AND HEEL PAD (ASSEMBLY)

From this moment we start using another tool called “cavallet”, which we use to fix the sole of the espadrille and help us to sew its parts, upper toe and heel pad.

Other tools used in this process are a needle and hand thimble, they help us to assemble the sole with its parts (upper toe toe and heel pad) being this artisanal process a characteristic feature of espadrilles made by hand.

SEW RIBBONS

This is the final process to finish the espadrilles, we cut the necessary measure of ribbon, depending on the size of the espadrille we will need more or less.

With the help of an awl, we make holes on the upper toe and heel pad for the points where we will pass the ribbons. Finally with the ribbons needle let's pass the ribbons through the espadrille in order to give it the final shape.

There are different models each have different way to sew ribbons, for example:

Pinxo / set vetes / tres tombs / traginer / carreter / vigatana

These are same model but depending on the location one name or another is used

Taverner / tarragonina / tres vetes

It is characterized by having white fabric on upper toe.

Vallenca

Direction of ribbons goes from front to back and cross at the tip, typical of Valls. It differs from the igualadina by the fact that ribbons do not cross at upper toe.

There are many other types such as palometa, miliciana, valenciana...
